Henry Obelnicki's athletic journey began in high school wrestling in Connecticut, where he competed for four years and qualified for the state championships. He then went on to earn a degree in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Vermont. After graduating, he worked as a preschool teacher, principal, and is now a teacher trainer. After moving to the West coast in 2014, Henry discovered BJJ in 2018 and has found it to be a perfect fit, providing a sense of calm and clarity. He loves the physical challenge and finds his "happy place" wrestling, whether on top or bottom.
As a lifelong teacher, Henry believes that education is a collaborative experience. He enjoys engaging with new students, often taking time to ensure that beginners have a welcoming and successful introduction to the sport. He is always happy to talk through a move or roll with a new student to help them progress.
Henry has competed regularly since starting BJJ, and he also developed a tumbling/intro to BJJ class for 3-5 year olds at his original gym. He is passionate about education as a joint experience between teacher and student. Henry loves how the sport helps him feel calm and clear-headed. Henry considers himself a wrestler at heart and finds his happy place in both top and bottom control.
