Zach grew up in and around Minneapolis, Minnesota, and has lived in Portland since 2011. He wrestled from age 8 to 14 before eventually finding his way to jiu jitsu. Unicorn is the only gym Zach has ever trained at, he started in April of 2022.
Zach is known around the gym as a dedicated leg locker, a reputation built during his lower belt years that he's since worked to round out with a deeper understanding of the fundamentals. He loves stringing leg attacks together with leg drags and other passing sequences, and he enjoys wrestling from standup and sprawling on a good wrestler. Competition highlights include countering a footlock with a footlock, after waiting for Coach Hillary's permission mid-match, and grinding out a comeback win in a best-of-three bracket.
Zach works as a woodworker at a small local shop that builds retail and trade fair fixtures, and he taught himself woodworking through YouTube. Outside the technical side of the sport, Zach cares most about helping people build self-confidence, something he says doesn't come naturally to him by default, which is part of what drives him to help others find it. He and his wife have built a strong social circle at Unicorn, and he loves that the gym maintains a culture where anyone can belong.
